Award 2021

Welcome to the Social Art Award 2021 – Online Gallery!

We are grateful for the many inspiring contributions from artists around the world. The selected works reflect a broad spectrum of contemporary social art practices and explore new relationships between humans, nature, and technology. They address themes such as ecological regeneration, climate justice, sustainable futures, social resilience, and more-than-human perspectives.

Below you will find the submissions from the Social Art Award 2021 – New Greening edition that passed the initial jury round. The Online Gallery offers public visibility to these works and encourages dialogue around their ideas and approaches; it does not replace the final jury decision.

Thank you to all artists for sharing your visionary and committed work. We invite you to explore the gallery and engage with the perspectives shaping New Greening.

Title:
Pour la biodiversité

Author:
Cedric Weizsacker

Description:
The artwork "pour la biodiversité" is painted on an old 60x40cm parking sign with acrylic paint and spray paint. The artwork focuses on the decreasing rate of biodiversity in Germany (and other countries) due to monoculturalism. By using a parking sign as medium, it critisices the german mandatory to build parking spots when you want to build a new house. This mandatory encourages the purchases of new cars and negatively influences our environment. With the artwork propose to introduce a biodiversity mandatory which forces you to build up spaces for different types of plants, flowers and animals instead of building more and more parking spots. In some federal states of Germany there are laws that force you to build up "green areas", but this often ends up in monocultures of ivy or grass areas which dont help the biodiversity in our environment. We need a minimal number of species and area mandatory replacing the parking spot mandatory to safe our trees and bees... there has to be biodiversity! Art is the speaker of the people. We express what we feel or think via different artistic mediums. If we want to change something, then art can be an emotional trigger to caralyze change. In the case of my artwork I focus on a little building law change which would have drastic impact. Art is our language, we should use it!
