The Social Art Award 2017
Can art change the world?
Under this question, the Institute for Art and Innovation e.V. had launched the first Social Art Award in 2017. Artists and cultural actors of all areas were invited to apply with their work to the field of social art. Artists from 131 countries responded with extraordinary works and projects.
On September 5, 2017, the three winners Lino Tonelotto from France, Quek Jia Qi from Singapore and Diogo da Cruz from Portugal were honored, and exhibited at WHITECONCEPTS Gallery in Berlin. They demonstrated with their politically engaged works that art can make current events visible and tangible. This is an important understanding for bringing forward the debate and thus a social change.

sleeping beauty/encyclopedia/circle of knowledge The Sleeping Beauty Encyclopaedia, first edition published in 2016 by CargoCult, is named after a western, female fairy figure, because the name of a completely utopian encyclopaedia full of gaps, could reflect the dreams of a woman in the western hemissphere, who sleeps for 100 years. Our Encyclopedia first raises the question, to whom belongs the dream of reality, even before it is opened. The sleeping beauty contains our knowledge and forms of knowledge (en-cyclo) which among other things are educational (pedia). The first distinction from a conventional codex is that the zero sides are in the middle. To the left, Sleeping Beauty counts in the range of negative numbers and to the right in the range of positive numbers. The keywords are intuitive and not arranged alphabetically. The strategy of knowledge exploration is to be different from the beginning, because this persistence on linearity hinders circumspection and provides for an acceleration which leads to one-sidedness, and promotes intolerance and demagogy by advancing along the pathways. We want an acceleration of circumspection. Objectivity and pragmatism create a world of lost bodies.( a lost body is one of cargocults labels) A lost body. We go with Edmund Husserl, when we invite "in the" Sleeping Beauty "to a" Wesensschau of the given "and we go with Walther Benjamin if this deliberately happens in the age of the reproducibility of works of art. With Lukrez and Derrida, we consciously create simulacren. We go much further, however, if we pursue the philosophy of white men and strive for an exit from these canons of knowledge. The "Sleeping Beauty" encyclopaedia owes its origin to the exhibition "a room of ones own- a lost body", that was curated and initiated by CargoCult in 2016. Individual pages of the Sleeping Beauty Enc. got glassless frames and have been contextualizing the exhibited artworks . The unprotected framed book page presents a collage of picture and text, which has large gaps and whose texts and pictures, if it makes sense, break the format. We have created a hybrid of collage and lexicon in order to convey artworks, that exceed all formats , artworks that "act" social in the field of Arts. The Sleeping Beauty on STARMAP. A book in the stars. That is the picture. A virtual book in a repetitive and endless NASA image of young suns. Individual stars / suns have coordinates on a website and are provided with a button, which activates a book page of Sleeping Beauty. The virtual appearance of Sleeping Beauty allows the participation of other media in the content. Thus the book pages contain films and links, moving pictures and paths into the net. This website has been created for the project "blue carpet, flying" and goes back to the desire for a navigation through the human and bureaucratic fields of our democracy, so the proposal to the promotion committee. We involve individuals and also organizations in the preparation of the individual pages . This has experimental character because we explore the mediation and transformation of the concept of Sleeping Beauty and the possible transfer to communities and individuals. The extent to which an aberration is, as it were, pre-programmed and the chance to become the source of new insights and links is an interesting aspect.
