A DREAM: SIDE VIEW sound installation Installation “A DREAM: SIDE VIEW” – is an artistic interpretation of a retirement from different aspects. The main concept of the installation is that retirement is not the finish line of the life path. It is a kind of invisible control line that reflects, like in the mirror, everything that was done before, allowing to see the whole picture, the result of all those tiny steps and small decisions that were made on the way towards it. The very shape of installation, the pillow, is associated with dreams and having a rest. It reflects the hope and expectations that people have for retirement, a kind of reward for the work and sacrifices that have been done before. Although nowadays such dream appears to be a bit naïve. Like in everyday life, in order to go to sleep you have to fix the bed first, the same in more global scale, if you want to have a quality and comfortable retirement, you have to prepare it. The parametric particles that make the pillow have the shape of triangles. Triangle as symbol has plenty of meanings and one of them, from the psychological point of view, is pain and fear. Thus, it shows some people’s thoughts of the retirement as something uncertain, unsure and scaring. The same as the game of lights and shadows on the pillow, or the silhouettes behind the surface, retirement is associated with the political and economic instability that might scare and disorient. Being designed as a parametric pillow that consists of many smaller and bigger particles, installation illustrates the retirement as a sum of little steps and decisions, which, if organized well, result into one beautiful and clear outcome. The key element of the installation is the mirror. In reality, there’s only a half of pillow. The mirror reflects another half, creating the image of completed object. On the one hand, it symbolizes the migration topic, showing that the significant part of the object (in the context of society) stays behind the border. On the other, modern technologies allow to travel and work abroad while being actually in the homeland. This is reflected by the side view of the installation: the pillow exists in two realities, two dimensions that complete each other. Piano work composed and performed especially for this artwork aims to bare people’s feelings, thoughts and emotions associated with the retirement. It gives the feeling of constant movement, where the increasing tempo changes with romantic waltz-rhythm parts, the same as in the life timeline running periods change with pauses when people slow down and look at the life they live. The beginning and the end of the piano work is a melancholic melody consisting of sequences that are played in 3 octaves, symbolizing dreaming or nostalgic thoughts in different age periods. The main theme though has a motivational character, aiming to inspire for action and movement. Overall, music supports the artwork, creating a kind of 3-dimensional space for the audience’s imagination and interpretation of the artwork.
