Award 2021

Welcome to the Social Art Award 2021 – Online Gallery!

We are grateful for the many inspiring contributions from artists around the world. The selected works reflect a broad spectrum of contemporary social art practices and explore new relationships between humans, nature, and technology. They address themes such as ecological regeneration, climate justice, sustainable futures, social resilience, and more-than-human perspectives.

Below you will find the submissions from the Social Art Award 2021 – New Greening edition that passed the initial jury round. The Online Gallery offers public visibility to these works and encourages dialogue around their ideas and approaches; it does not replace the final jury decision.

Thank you to all artists for sharing your visionary and committed work. We invite you to explore the gallery and engage with the perspectives shaping New Greening.

Title:
Upcycling Artwork with Wedding Envelopes

Author:
Natsumi Tabusa

Description:
This is an upcycling artwork with wedding envelopes which used a lot in a Japanese wedding. I'm planning to hold workshops for students in London to create artwork with wedding envelopes. The purpose of this artwork and workshop is following three; 1. Upcycling wedding envelopes It is customary for the Japanese to give the bride and groom money in decorated envelopes at wedding parties. A wedding with 100 guests brings 100 envelopes, and most of the envelopes once used will be thrown away. 2. Utilizing wedding envelopes as a tool for cultural exchange Cultural differences among countries and regions are strongly expressed in weddings. These envelopes are made of Japanese paper and ceremonial strings. The patterns on the paper and the shapes of the decorations have various meanings. They also provoke a conversation about how different countries celebrate marriage. 3. Creating opportunities to think about the environmental impact of weddings It is necessary to rethink how we balance the traditional culture and sustainability.
